Noa Lang will undergo surgery after suffering a serious cut to his thumb in Galatasaray’s defeat to Liverpool.

A 4-0 loss at Anfield on Wednesday night resulted in Galatasaray crashing out of the Champions League 4-1 on aggregate in the round of 16.

However, their exit from European football’s biggest stage has been somewhat overshadowed by a serious double injury blow.

Lang was a replacement for Victor Osimhen at the start of the second half after the Nigerian striker, early in the first half, took a blow to his left wrist after being caught by the knee of Ibrahima Konate during an aerial challenge.

Although, Lang also had to be replaced late on after his momentum took him stumbling into the advertising hoardings behind the goal, where his hand got caught and a deep wound opened up on his right thumb.

Lang was in significant discomfort and bleeding as he was consoled by team-mates and opponents, with the Dutchman receiving treatment from Galatasaray’s medical staff before being given oxygen and stretchered off.

Having been rushed to hospital, it has since been confirmed that Lang will undergo surgery, while a decision as to whether Osimhen requires an operation will be made after he suffered a fracture in his right forearm.

A Galatasaray statement reads: “Our player Victor Osimhen, who sustained a blow to his arm in the first half of the Champions League Round of 16 second leg match against Liverpool away from home, was not allowed to play in the second half due to a risk of fracture following checks at halftime.

“After the match, a check-up at the hospital under the supervision of our medical team confirmed a fracture in his right forearm, and a cast was applied.

A decision regarding surgery will be made in the coming days following further assessments.

“In the second half of the same match, our player Noa Lang suffered a serious cut to his right thumb and is scheduled to undergo surgery in Liverpool in the coming hours, with our medical team present.”
