Gabriel's Arsenal red card against Southampton highlights the biggest weakness in his game

Gabriel Magalhaes was sent off during Arsenal's 1-1 draw against Southampton.

The Brazilian's dismissal ensured that for the second time in as many games Arsenal were forced to surrender the initiative after working hard to turn the momentum in their favour.

Unlike with Granit Xhaka though, Gabriel came out immediately after the game on social media to publicly apologise for his misdemeanour.

In a season that has been overwhelmingly negative for Arsenal the £23.5m signing has been a shining light. Since his arrival from Lille he has quickly established himself as the best centre back at the club and at 22-years-of-age has the potential to become even better.

Mikel Arteta press conference after Arsenal 1-1 Southampton

He seems to have all the attributes required to be a top class defender. If you want one-vs-one defending ability the Gabriel has got it. Aerial prowess? The Brazilian has that too. Perhaps most importantly in the modern game he is also fantastic on the ball as well. Only Rodri, Andy Robertson and Kurt Zouma have completed more passes in the Premier League this season.

It's perhaps for this reason why Mikel Arteta was not as harsh on the Brazilian as he was on say Nicolas Pepe whose straight card against Leeds he described as "unacceptable", or Granit Xhaka whose dismissal against Burnley he described as "even worse."

What the Spaniard might well be concerned about though is how much the red card highlights a part of Gabriel's game that he must stamp out if he is to reach his full potential.

After receiving a first yellow card for kicking the ball away as Southampton tried to take a quick free kick the 22-year-old knew he was going to have to be careful for the rest of the match.

This made his decision to get so tight to Theo Walcott on the halfway line in the build up to his second booking all the more disappointing to see. When faced with a player of Walcott's pace so high up the pitch, the best policy for a defender is often to drop off, particularly when they are on a yellow. If they don't do this then they risk being completely exposed if the attacker is able to turn away from them.

That was exactly what happened as Walcott was simply too quick for Gabriel, and with one moment of rashness Arsenal's chances of winning the game more or less went up in smoke.

Getting too tight to an opponent high up the pitch was also something Gabriel was guilty of in the lead up to Southampton's goal. The Brazilian was so eager to get tight to Che Adams that when the ball did slip in between his legs, Kieran Tierney was totally exposed as Walcott ran in to score.

When Gabriel signed for Arsenal in the summer he revealed in his first interview exactly what his playing style would be like.

"What you can expect from me is that I will always give everything on and off the pitch" he said in an interview with the club's YouTube channel.

It's this attitude that has made him a fans favourite so quickly at the Emirates. But it is also the eagerness to give everything on the pitch that has ensured he will be spending more time off it.

Gabriel will be a great defender hopefully for years to come at Arsenal, but the Brazilian must learn that choosing when not to engage with his opponent is just as important as deciding when to do so.

At just 22-years-of-age he has plenty of time to iron this mistake out of his game, and the hope is that the red card against Southampton does not cloud all the brilliant work he's done in a Gunners' shirt this season.
