Gabon hit with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang injury blow ahead of Africa Cup of Nations

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will miss Gabon's opening match at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The veteran striker was forced off during Marseille’s win over Monaco in Ligue 1 on Sunday, to throw his involvement in the Morocco tournament into doubt.

But scans have allayed fears of a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Aubameyang will now remain in France to recover from the injury, before joining up with the Gabon squad.

Gabon faces a tricky group stage, starting against Cameroon on December 24 - which Aubameyang will miss - before facing Mozambique and Ivory Coast to complete Group F.

Head coach Thierry Mouyouma last week named this 28-man squad for the tournament, headlined by Aubameyang at the age of 36.

Bruno Ecuele Manga, 37, is the oldest in a squad which also includes midfield general Mario Lemina and LAFC striker Dennis Bouanga. Much will be expected from young defenders Jacques Ekomie and Urie-Michel Mboula.

Aubameyang is his country's all-time top scorer, with 38 goals in 79 appearances.
