GAA club game abandoned after player suffers horror injury

An Antrim Senior Football League game was abandoned on Sunday morning after a player was taken to hospital with a suspected double leg fracture.

Marcus Donnelly, a talented dual player with St Gall’s, sustained the nasty injury in the opening minutes of the second half during Sunday’s Division One clash with county champions Cargin at Toome.

As an ambulance was called for, referee Karol Doherty brought the game to an end with the hosts leading 1-6 to 1-5 at the time.

Donnelly had scored his side’s first half goal as the Milltown Row outfit made a fine start to the game before Cargin goalkeeper John McNabb replied in kind for Ronan Devlin’s men.

Cargin led 1-5 to 1-3 at half-time with Niall O’Neill reducing the deficit to the minimum in the opening stages of the second half.

Moments later, the game was halted after Donnelly fell awkwardly and it soon became clear that he would require medical assistance.

In a statement issued on Facebook, St Gall’s wished their player a speedy recovery, saying: "Our Senior football match was halted this morning after Marcus Donnelly suffered a serious injury, not long into the second half.

“We would like to express our gratitude to Cargin GAC for their help and support in attending to our player. We wish Marcus a speedy recovery.”

Cargin also offered their well wishes on Facebook, adding: “Best wishes and speedy recovery to Marcus Donnelly of St Galls, who sustained a serious injury during this morning's league game.”
