Six years after last defeating a North American team in an international series, G2 Esports broke the streak today by taking down FlyQuest, the LCS’s top seed, to secure their place in the Worlds 2025 Knockout Stage.
After the Worlds 2025 Swiss Stage draw, fans eagerly anticipated the clash between two juggernauts representing the best of their regions on the international stage. In their previous meeting at MSI 2025, FlyQuest comfortably defeated G2 Esports to eliminate them from the tournament, giving G2 even more motivation to turn things around.
FlyQuest squashed G2 in the early game of the first match to secure a monumental lead with their carries. Despite having three Dragons, G2 were behind in gold, and FlyQuest easily secured the first match.
In the next match, G2 worked on their drafts, relied on their creativity to flex a Galio in the top lane, and bounced back stronger to stun the North American team, taking the series to the decider. In the final match, G2 pulled up a pick that nobody had seen on the Worlds stage since 2014 in any role: Dr Mundo.
You’d expect Dr Mundo to go into the hands of Brokenblade, but Skewmond, the promising rookie, picked the mad doctor in the jungle. It’s been 13 years since fans have seen Mundo in the jungle, and it delivered tankiness, sustain, and solid poke damage for G2 to facilitate their team composition.
Even though FlyQuest secured two Barons after winning the teamfights, Caps’ wombo combo, in which he leveraged Mundo’s tankiness to land a perfect four-man Shockwave, sealed the deal for the European team.
After the heartbreaking loss, Inspired admitted that FlyQuest were “impatient” in the post-match interview. With G2 already in the Knockouts, FlyQuest will get a final chance in the 2-2 bracket to lock in their slot in Shanghai or go home empty-handed.
