An eye-opening situation has come to light after Serco, a private contractor working for the Home Office, released a document urging landlords across the North West, Midlands and East of England to rent out their properties to the surging number of asylum seekers.
Now, normally, landlords would run a mile at the thought of renting their valuable properties – often their livelihood – to undocumented migrants. And who could blame them? The first thing many asylum seekers reportedly do when they hit the White Cliffs of Dover is ditch their passports overboard, making it impossible to verify their age or even where they actually came from, reported GB News.
Sir Keir Starmer has apparently decided it’s cheaper to stick migrants in rental homes rather than continue shelling out for pricey hotels. And fair enough, it probably is cheaper – but it would obviously be a lot cheaper if we weren’t accepting these numbers in the first place.
Already this year, 9,500 migrants have made the dangerous journey by boat – a huge 33% jump from last year. Funny how you don’t hear much about “smashing the gangs” anymore, do you? If anything, it feels more like we’re rolling out the red carpet for them… or at least rolling it out for the landlords.
The knock-on effect? Tens of thousands of flats could be snapped up, sending the cost of what’s left through the roof. Has no one in government heard of basic supply and demand? It’s almost laughable – if it wasn’t happening right in front of us.
What’s even more staggering is that Serco is already managing 7,000 properties housing 30,000 migrants. So if you’re wondering why you can’t find anywhere affordable to rent, there’s your answer.
Serco claims that shifting migrants to private rentals would slash nightly costs from £145 to just £34. Big saving, sure. But how long can we seriously keep this up?
Recent polls even show that immigration now tops public concerns, overtaking worries about the NHS and energy bills. Yet our Prime Minister seems totally detached from the anger simmering across the country.
Starmer talks tough but seems to be delivering little. His big new move? Briefing The Telegraph that Labour plans to make it harder for foreign students to stay after graduating by clamping down on low-paid job routes like healthcare. Sounds more like a flashy headline than real action.
With Reform and the Greens ready to smash Labour from both sides in Thursday’s council elections, the writing’s on the wall. Even in Labour strongholds like Runcorn and Mosley, where a by-election’s being held thanks to a drunken MP’s street brawl conviction, voters are furious.
There’s talk of Wes Streeting as a better Labour leader – but honestly, until Labour wakes up and gets a grip on migration, they’ll remain stuck: unpopular, unelectable, and clueless about why.
