Fury at mucky disabled spaces left in 'disgraceful' state at Ayrshire car park

An Ayr man has told how disabled people in the town are being let down by the state of car park spaces.

Wallace Glendinning, 51, was left affronted by the state of the bays for blue badge holders at the council-run car park next to Station Road.

The civil engineer had noticed the spaces at the car park between Ayr College and Ayr Station had lain mucky for months due to a build up of dirt.

And Wallace was left concerned that the spaces had been abandoned by road chiefs whilst electric vehicle bays were left sparkling clean by comparison.

He told the Ayrshire Post: “Through lockdown I have been exercising a lot more, I go through the area quite regularly.

“I just noticed what a bad state it was in and it has been like that for months with no change.

“It's a disgrace that anyone, never mind someone with a disability, is expected to use a space covered in muck.

“I decided to report it to Ayrshire Roads Alliance because it will put blue badge holders off from parking there.

Wallace believes disabled people "deserve better" (AYRSHIRE POST)

“They deserve better, no one wants to get out of their car with a disability and right into mud it’s a prime location for people to access shops and the town centre.”

Wallace has noticed that the spaces used for charging electric cars appear to be brand new by comparison.

And he hopes that other disabled spaces across South Ayrshire are not in the same state.

Wallace added: “You have to wonder what the proportion of blue badge holders is and South Ayrshire and how much quality parking is available to them?

“It does make you think. The electric spaces are used all the time and appear to be well looked after.”

Ayrshire Roads Alliance say they will treat the tidy-up job as a priority.

A spokesperson for the roads team said: “The Ayrshire Roads Alliance has inspected the car park and will ensure that this area is cleaned as a matter of priority.”
