Fury as big-name brands continue to trade with Russia despite Ukraine invasion

Global brands which haven’t joined the Russian trade boycott were facing a customer backlash last night.

Tesco has been blasted on social media for failing to follow other supermarkets in withdrawing Russian-made vodka from sale.

McDonald’s, which has more than 850 restaurants in Russia, also angered customers by failing to break off business links with Vladimir Putin’s ruthless regime.

Coca-Cola and PepsiCo have so far remained silent on whether they will sever links with Russia.

Tesco says it is following UK Government guidance and is making a £1million donation to the Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal.

But one Twitter user said: “Won’t be shopping at Tesco again... hitting Russia hard with sanctions is all we got.”

Fashion chain Zara and mobile phone giant Samsung yesterday became the latest firms to suspend trading in Russia, along with German sports-wear maker Puma, which has 100 stores there, and posh brand Prada.

The anger comes as Russian forces continue to bomb and attack Ukrainian cities.

Hundreds of people have been killed since Vladimir Putin ordered the "special military operation" on the morning of February 24.

Bombings continued overnight, as Ukrainian cities continued to come under heavy pressure from Russian forces.

The mayor of Mykolaiv, a southern port in Ukraine, warned the public to avoid picking anything up in the city.

In a message posted to Facebook, Oleksandr Senkevych wrote that Russian troops had targeted residential buildings in the city, and shared a video of a block of flats engulfed in flames.

"There are many shells in the city that did not explode... do not approach, do not lift, and do not try to move them yourself," Senkevych warned.

Meanwhile, in the south-eastern city of Mariupol, Russian shelling has killed at least 10 people.
