Furious Consett man slams his constituency on BBC 5 Live for voting in Tory MP Richard Holden

A County Durham man has taken to the radio to express his dismay at his constituency for voting in a Conservative MP.

North West Durham had been held by Labour since the seat's re-creation in 1950.

Prominent Corbynista Laura Pidcock was tipped to be a future Labour leader.

But on Thursday she fell in an historic victory for the Conservative party and new MP Richard Holden.

The result has left Consett man Shaun "furious" and he called into BBC 5 Live Breakfast to vent his anger.

Talking to Rachael Burden and Nicky Campbell, Shaun certainly didn't hold back.

He said: "Oh dear me, I am absolutely fuming mate. I cannot believe these Labour voters have voted the Tories in in Consett, County Durham.

"I cannot believe it, like. It has done my head. We have never had a Tory MP up here.

"I only hope that America do take the NHS over and they'll be thrilled the backstabbing Labour 'I'm voting Brexit'. You vote Brexit you vote Tory. That's what this country's come to.

"The NHS is knackered, everything is knackered. The disabled people are knackered, everyone's knackered.

"I can't believe some of my mates who have turned around and said they are voting Brexit. Some of them voted for it because they didn't like Jeremy Corbyn.

"If they didn't like Jeremy Corbyn , why didn't we just have a Labour Government? If he was no good we could have got rid of him like the Tories have done for the last four years.

"We didn't have to go down the Tory road here. I am absolutely fuming."

In 2017, Ms Pidcock won 25,308 votes compared to Conservative candidate Sally-Ann Hart's 16,516 - meaning the Tory candidate overturned a majority of 8,792 votes.

When asked by Mr Campbell what he would say to his friends following the shock result, Shaun said: "I'm going out this afternoon for my mate's birthday. He voted Brexit. To vote Brexit you vote Conservative.

"I'm going to say thanks for putting the Tories in in Consett, County Durham.

"I cannot believe it. I can't believe we have a Tory MP up here."
