Funky musical maze opens to families for free at Dundee museum

An indoor multicoloured morphing maze designed to make adults more playful has been unveiled at Dundee's V&A design museum.

Listening to Joy, created by British-Nigerian artist Yinka Ilori, has been created especially for V&A Dundee and is open to all ages to explore.

It is made up of zippable mesh panels and interactive elements so visitors can change the shape of the maze as they go.

The maze also has two circular xylophones which people can play in the unique setting of the award-winning museum's atrium.

Visitors' noises of joy and laughter, along with their musical stylings on the xylophones, will be recorded and transformed into a series of musical compositions too.

Yinka Ilori visited V&A Dundee this morning to unveil the new maze, which was designed especially for the museum, and tested it out along with pupils from the city's St Peter and St Paul Primary School.

He believes the maze could help adults and kids play together more - by making adults step out of their comfort zone and embrace having a little unorthodox fun.

Ilori said: "Play should be collaborative, so I have created this installation for visitors of all ages to explore sounds, colours and patterns in a shared space.

"I hope that Listening to Joy will spark imaginations and remind all of us of the power of play."

Sophie McKinlay, director of programme at the museum, called the maze "brilliant and bold" while the People's Postcode Lottery, which funded the new attraction, said it would bring "much fun and laughter" to visitors.

Listening to Joy is free to access in V&A Dundee's Locke Hall until April 24 2022.
