SDLP leader and Foyle MP Colum Eastwood was amongst those paying tribute ahead of his funeral.

In a social media post, Mr Eastwood wrote: "Very sorry to learn of Patsy Hume’s passing. Patsy stood with his brother John through hard times during the Troubles, was committed to the education of our young people and a passionate community worker. Thinking of all of Patsy’s family at this time."

He added: "May he rest in peace."

Former SDLP MLA Pat Ramsey also paid tribute, describing his late friend as a "long standing member and key player in the development of the Cursillo Community both in Derry and Donegal"

Mr Ramsey added: "Our thoughts and prayers with all the Hume family at this most difficult time."

St Cecilia's College, in a statement, also paid tribute to Mr Hume.

"Paddy served on our Board of Governors from December 1993 until April 2016, much of his time as Chairman. His memory will remain in our hearts as a caring, gentle, considerate person who dedicated a large part of his life to supporting our whole school community.

"Paddy was a great family man and was very rarely seen without his beloved wife Bridget. Bridget was also a great supporter of our school, leading the PTA for many years."

The statement continued: "Paddy's sense of pride in St Cecilia's was very evident. He took every opportunity to support our pupils in whatever they did, whether it be athletics, exam results, feis', but he had a special place in his heart for the choir."

Requiem Mass for Mr Hume is due to take place at St Columba’s Church, Longtower on Wednesday morning.

He is described in a family notice as "loving father of Paul, Brenda, Fiona, Ursula, Una and Seana, father-in-law of Maria, Tommy, John, David, Ray and Brendan, a devoted grandfather and dear brother of Jim and the late John, Annie, Harry, Agnes and his twin Sally."
