'Full-on' blaze engulfs home in inner south Canberra

A major fire has destroyed a multi-storey home in Yarralumla, in Canberra's inner south.

Emergency services received multiple triple zero calls about the house fire on Schomburgk Street about 7.29pm on Friday, July 10.

Commander Scott Weston from ACT Fire and Rescue said the owners of the residence were not in the home at the time of the fire.

He said firefighters arrived to the property "well alight", and that the blaze needed to be fought from the outside.

"The extent of the damage prior to our arrival didn't make it safe for firefighters to enter at all," Commander Weston said.

Three fire trucks and a combined aerial pumping appliance were at the scene when the fire was extinguished about 8.33pm.

The roof of the scorched property had caved in and smoke emanated from within the home. Rooms in the home appeared charred with a layer of soot outlining all entry points.

Masked firefighters carrying tanks of clean air on their backs were seen taking turns inspecting the internal damage and hosing down hotspots.

About 24 firefighting personnel and an ambulance remained at the location. Ash particles lingered in the air while ACT Policing vehicles closed sections of Schomburgk and Maxwell streets.

An ACT Emergency Services spokesman at 9.30pm said there said there were no reports of injuries and "everyone was accounted for".

As a result of the "full-on" fire, there was extensive smoke in the area with flames reaching "up to the trees", a neighbour said.

The neighbour said she only became aware of the fire after a witness, who saw the blaze from about 500 metres away, ran to all the houses in the area "thumping on doors".

"He said he smelt the smoke from the shops," she said, stating she joined the man in alerting other neighbours on the street.

The neighbour, a real estate worker, said the occupants had moved into the "old" property less than a month before the incident.

Commander Weston said an investigation was under way to determine the cause of the house fire.
