Full list of forbidden items confiscated from prisoners' cells

Weapons, spice and heroin were all seized from inmates at HMP Liverpool in 2020, according to new figures.

A Freedom of Information request submitted by the ECHO found that the number of incidents with psychoactive substances (which has a street name of Spice) has risen in Altcourse this year.

A number of weapons, drugs, alcohol and illegal mobile phones were also seized by staff in HMP Liverpool, HMP Altcourse and HMP Berwyn.

The Ministry of Justice was asked for the number of seizures from cells at all three prisons throughout 2020 - however, their response only provided a list of the items seized until March of this year.

They said: "MoJ holds all the information from April 2020 to August 2020.

"However, it is exempt from disclosure under section 22(1) of the FOIA, because it is intended for future publication.

"This will be published in the next publication due in July 2021."

Despite the short time frame covered in the Ministry of Justice's response concerning figures were found.

At Altcourse, a Category B men's prison in Fazakerley, figures shared with the ECHO reveal that in the first three months of 2020 incidents with psychoactive substances which includes substances known as Spice increased to 21.

The figure is up compared to the same three months in 2019 which shows nine incidents.

There were also 49 recordings of cannabis being found, nine of cocaine, one of steroids and five that are described as an unknown/other substance.

Similarly the first three months of the year uncovered 122 mobile phones and 77 sim cards, both of which are up from the same time last year.

There were also 42 occasions where chargers were found and four other mobile phone related items were discovered.

Worryingly, by the end of March 2020, prison officers also unearthed 42 weapons including blades, compared to 27 in the same period in 2019.

Instances where alcohol was found to be in use was down from four to three.

In HMP Liverpool, the Category B/C facility located in Walton, incidents including psychoactive substances spice were down seven from January to March in 2019 to two in the first three months of 2020.

The same can be said for drug occurrences in general with 41 incidents taking place from January to March 2020 compared to 52 at the beginning of 2019.

For the first three months of the year in HMP Liverpool, police recorded 30 cannabis recoveries, one cocaine, one heroin, four steroids and two pregabalin.
