Fulham boss Claudio Ranieri wants 'experienced leader' as he targets Chelsea defender Gary Cahill

Claudio Ranieri has warned Fulham it is crucial they to sign an experienced defender and “a leader” during the January window as they targets a move for Gary Cahill.

Fulham want to sign Cahill from Chelsea and the Blues are willing to let the 32-year-old leave this month.

“I need somebody who can help us,” said Ranieri. “We have a very good team but without experience. We need somebody who has experience, is a leader, has good character, personality and then we can improve our team.”

Fulham’s need for a new centre has intensified because Alfie Mawson is set for a spell out with a knee injury. Mawson is still being assessed by Fulham before they put a timescale on when he will be able to return.

Ranieri has warned Fulham they must sign reinforcements this month if they are to get out of trouble and avoid relegation in the Premier League.

“We have to bring somebody to survive,” said the Italian, speaking ahead of Saturday’s crunch trip to Burnley. “It would be a very good boost for all of my players.

"We are looking in every direction and we will see what happens. The transfer market is open and we are ready to take something that can help Fulham."

Ranieri also confirmed that Timothy Fosu-Mensah is set to return to Manchester United with Fulham set to cut short his loan deal at Craven Cottage.
