FSG have two more signings to make before Liverpool change is made

It's a huge summer for Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp.

The Reds endured their most difficult season during the German's time in charge last time out and have been in need of reinforcements in the transfer market.

Liverpool moved quickly to sign Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai this summer, but have FSG, who have come under scrutiny for their investment in the player staff, done enough?

Our writers have their say:

'So far, so good, but rejuvenation of squad needs more'

Paul Gorst: With £95m laid out for Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, this is already the biggest spending summer at Anfield since 2018 when the building blocks of that glorious era between 2019 and 2022 were put down.

But while the additions of the two players so far have provided something of a new look to a midfield department that is now without Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner and Naby Keita, more is needed to totally rejuvenate this squad.

A defensive-minded midfielder would be ideal to increase the competition on Fabinho, while a left-sided defender must be targeted if Jurgen Klopp is to stick properly with the new formation that was successfully rolled out in the final two months of the season.

While Liverpool can never be accused of burning through money when it comes to first-team recruitment, there has to be a level of agility to the purse strings this summer, which are largely controlled by Mike Gordon, who is FSG's 'man on the ground' as it were when it comes to Liverpool.

A lack of Champions League football and its accompanying riches will always leave a club like Liverpool hamstrung, but it cannot be used as an excuse not to fund further rebuilding this summer and two more are needed for the Reds to have a real chance of bouncing back firmly from last year's effort.

It's a really good start. But only a start, nonetheless.

'FSG are delivering but two more signings would be ideal'

Sean Bradbury: Whatever way you look at 2022/23, Liverpool paid the price for mistakes made last summer.

Granted, there was some rotten luck with injuries and a clear hangover from gunning for a quadruple.

But preparations and recruitment plans put in place before the campaign quickly turned it into a transitional season, rather than a step forward.

The minimum required from FSG in this window was to right those wrongs.

In addition, the Boston owners had to stand by their word that it would be "business as usual" while they seek investment into the club.

So far - with £95m laid down on Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai - they are delivering.

Of course, things can only be fully judged by the end of August. Ideally a centre-back and a more defensive-minded midfielder would arrive by then. Fair questions will likely be asked should neither of those deals come to pass.

Yet there can be no doubt there is excitement building around Liverpool once again.

There are several causes for optimism - not just from the two new recruits, but also the formation switch from Jurgen Klopp that has reinvigorated Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Should FSG sanction additional signings, they have the opportunity to perhaps win over even some of their most ardent critics.

A defender capable of competing with Andy Robertson and more naturally slotting into a back three, plus someone in the mould of Romeo Lavia who could add extra energy to the engine room would set the Reds up very nicely.

Over to you, John Henry...

'The big signings are done - now it's time to take some chances'

Joe Rimmer: With two signings through the door to the tune of £95m, Liverpool are, at the time of writing, the Premier League's biggest spenders.

And so they should be.

Liverpool are out to right the wrongs of last year and they've certainly made a decent start.

But nobody at Anfield should think this is enough.

Don't forget, last summer started in similar fashion when FSG committed big money to bring in Darwin Nunez, as well as Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsey. But there was a school of thought that those three players wouldn't be enough, even if they were joining a squad that had gone within two results of a quadruple.

And so it proved, with Liverpool's season almost immediately going off the rails with injuries and loss of form impacting on their Premier League campaign.

So Liverpool have signed the two players they needed most this summer, but now is the time to push it a little harder.

Jurgen Klopp said he wanted FSG to take more chances, so Liverpool should lie in wait with their chequebook and make that happen. Romeo Lavia becomes available? Go out and get him. Force Chelsea's hand on Levi Colwill. Pursue opportunistic deals for a right-back or forward.

Yes, there are plenty of players in the squad. But football is all about competition and it's up to those already at Anfield to sink or swim in the face of increased competition. That is what big clubs do and it's what happened in 2018, when young players such as Dominic Solanke and Danny Ward were sold.

FSG have backed Klopp this summer and it's welcome, but now is the time to listen to their manager and roll the dice on one or two more in the transfer market.
