A friend of Valeria Marquez, the TikTok influencer murdered this week in Mexico while streaming live, is being accused of playing a role in the crime.
Vivian de la Torre has not been formally named as a suspect, but followers of Marquez noted that she insisted her to stay in her beauty salon minutes before the attack even though she was talking about leaving.
De la Torre rejected the accusations, saying "we never imagined what was going to happen." "Vale received gifts frequently, many times while streaming live," she said, according to Infobae. "Vale was like a sister to me."
The Jalisco Prosecutor's office issued a statement to clarify there are no formal suspects at the time, specifically rejecting Vivian de la Torre is being investigated.
The statement also comes after Mexican outlet Milenio reported that a man known as "El Doble R" or "El Tripa" is believed to be the prime suspect in the killing. Milenio added that authorities identified the suspect as Ricardo Ruiz Velasco, believed to be a high-ranking member of the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) operating in the city of Zapopan. It added that he had been involved in a romantic relationship with Marquez for months and frequently became enraged over the expensive gifts Márquez received from her followers.
Márquez was livestreaming from her salon on Tuesday when a man posing as a delivery driver entered the premises and opened fire after confirming her identity. Márquez was struck twice, once in the chest and once in the head, and was reported dead at the scene by authorities.
Authorities are investigating the case as a femicide, a legal classification in Mexico for killings of women due to gender-based violence.
Mexico is currently grappling with a widespread femicide crisis, and social media has since been flooded with messages of grief and tributes to her work. Valeria Márquez was well known in the local influencer scene, often posting beauty tips, tutorials, and updates from her salon. In addition to her online persona, she had worked as a model and had won a regional beauty pageant in 2021.
