Children in Need
7.30pm, BBC1, BBC2
Children in Need returns for 2016, with the early shift helmed by Tess Daly, Greg James, Graham Norton and former Paralympian Ade Adepitan, who introduces a kids’ version of Would I Lie to You and announces the winner of the first ever Sir Terry Wogan fundraiser of the year award. Later, switch to BBC2 for music from Michael Bublé, Take That and Ellie Goulding, while the late show on BBC1 sees a comedy dance performance from the cast of Citizen Khan. Ben Arnold
Unreported World
7.30pm, Channel 4
One in three South African women use bleaching creams (in downtown Johannesburg there are more than 500 products available), and there are stiff laws against products containing potentially dangerous chemicals. However, it seems many have slipped through the net and are even being endorsed by celebrities. Is the Rainbow Nation being poisoned? Tania Rashid and Simon Rawles explore a very worrying trend. American Horror Story: Roanoke
10pm, Fox
With its Roanoke murder mansion haunted by a killer with the head of a pig, season six of Ryan Murphy’s stab-happy anthology series probably hasn’t done much for North Carolina property prices. However, on the blood-spattered way to tonight’s finale, it has gleefully skewered lurid true-crime docs and the perfidiousness of reality TV. A seventh season has already been confirmed – hopefully standout newbie Cuba Gooding Jr will return. Graeme Virtue
Jamie’s Super Food
8pm, Channel 4
Jamie Oliver’s most recent world tour has been much like his others: slightly awkward meetings with locals, mention of “happy days”, preparation of nice-looking food. The twist this time has been healthy – but not faddish – eating, and tonight he travels to Jeju in South Korea for a look at the power of the sesame seed. Later, he heads to Switzerland for some surprising facts about chocolate, which inspires a cocoa-infused chilli. John Robinson
Secrets of Great British Castles
8pm, Channel 5
Historian Dan Jones was on more fecund ground with his previous series Britain’s Bloodiest Dynasty; the backstabbing Plantagenets suited his urgent style. Profiles of castles are inevitably going to be less energised, but Jones elucidates clearly, and York Castle has memorable stories, both horrible (in 1190 it hosted Britain’s worst Jewish pogrom) and, from its time as a jail, riotous. Dick Turpin, for example, ran up a huge room-service bill there. Jack Seale
Rick Stein’s Long Weekends
9pm, BBC2
Copenhagen, reckons Rick Stein, is a place where some of the food is “just a little too complicated for an old geezer”. That’s because his latest trip involves sampling “new Nordic cuisine”, which on the plate looks rather like nouvelle cuisine reimagined by tweezer-wielders with a fetish for local produce. Still, it’s not all hipsterish: Stein also cooks pork belly with lovage, potatoes and parsley sauce, recently voted Denmark’s favourite dish. Jonathan Wright
Sid! By Those Who Really Knew Him
11.45pm, Sky Arts
This is a “celebration” of the life of Sid Vicious, though his life hardly seems worth celebrating: a barely competent musician whose solo album, Sid Sings, is one of the worst ever made, who died while on trial for the murder of girlfriend Nancy Spungen. However, he has become a punk icon, beautiful to some. Among those recalling the real Sid are the Damned’s Dave Vanian, Marco Pirroni and Steven Severin of Siouxsie and the Banshees. David Stubbs
Film choice
Dad’s Army (Oliver Parker, 2016) 10.15am, 8pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
A crack squad of British actors are on parade in this loving homage to the cherished TV sitcom. Toby Jones is the pompous Captain Mainwaring, Bill Nighy the insouciant Sergeant Wilson and Michael Gambon is Private Godfrey, while Catherine Zeta-Jones brings some unlikely glamour to wartime Walmington-on-Sea. Hamish McColl’s screenplay has its moments, but can’t quite access the lovely, characterful warmth of TV series writers David Croft and the recently deceased Jimmy Perry.
