The government's decision to import fresh fish from a radioactive-contaminated area in Japan's Fukushima prefecture has raised alarm among consumer groups. Such concerns bring no surprise.
According to media reports, Thailand is the first country to import fish from the area since the nuclear crisis triggered by a massive quake and tsunami on March 11, 2011. The nuclear meltdown caused long-term health concerns, including cancer, as a result of radiation in the area.
The Japan Times reported that a 110kg shipment of fresh flatfish was last week sent to Thailand from a port in Soma. The fish is to be served at 12 Japanese restaurants in Bangkok that were not named.
