Fresh James Garner transfer claims made as Man United await Nottingham Forest move

Nottingham Forest are reportedly back in for Manchester United midfielder James Garner amid hopes of a possible summer move.

The midfield spent last season on loan at the City Ground, where he played a huge part in the club's promotion to the Premier League. Garner appeared 49 times for the Reds last summer and played a starring role in Steve Cooper's midfield alongside Ryan Yates.

A possible return to the East Midlands has been tipped throughout the summer transfer window, but the 21-year-old remained at Old Trafford to be part of Erik ten Hag's squad for pre-season. However, Garner was an unused substitute in United's 2-1 home defeat to Brighton and they are said to be keen on signing Juventus' Adrien Rabiot.

The Reds are on the search for a new centre-midfielder as Cooper continues to rebuild his squad for his side's return to the Premier League. There have already been 12 new faces brought in at the City Ground this summer and further reinforcements are set to be added before the deadline.

According to the Daily Mail, Forest are 'back on the trail' to sign Garner back from United. Due to Dean Henderson's loan move earlier in the summer, Forest are unable to sign the 23-year-old on another loan due to the rules permitting them to only one player per club.

Henderson's arrival means the Reds must purchase Garner on a permanent transfer if they are to re-sign him. His contract in Manchester expires in 2024 and with ten Hag searching for a new midfielder, a possible permanent departure could be on the cards. He currently has competition in midfield from Scott McTominay, Donny van de Beek, Fred, Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes at Old Trafford.
