Fresh flood alerts issued in Bristol by Environment Agency

New flood alerts have been issued today (April 1) for parts of Bristol after the city experienced heavy rain over the past few days. The Environment Agency has issued two flood alerts for rivers across the city where flooding is ‘possible' and people should 'be prepared'.

The first area at risk covers Bristol Frome, Ladden Brook, River Trym and tributaries between Chipping Sodbury and Tytherington to Bristol Floating Harbour and the Bristol Avon. The second alert was for the Lower River Avon, River Boyd, By and Brislington Brooks and tributaries.

Advice from the Environment Agency states: "Flooding is possible in this area. Monitor local water levels and weather conditions.

"Avoid using low lying footpaths or entering areas prone to flooding. Start acting on your flood plan if you have one. Environment Agency Flood Warning Officers set the river or tidal levels that have triggered this message."

Heavy rain has wreaked havoc around the South West over the weekend. Flooding along the railway lines between Bristol Parkway, Bath Spa and Swindon has caused issues since Saturday morning.

Rail disruptions are expected to continue at Bristol Parkway until 10am on Sunday (April 2). Downpours earlier this morning saw some roads closed due to flooding and a number of accidents, with some issues along the M5 and M4.

People can check for current flood alerts here. The rain is forecast to ease off in Bristol tonight and tomorrow, with cloudy conditions expected on Sunday (April 2), brightening up in the afternoon, according to the Met Office.

The forecaster has issued the following update for the South West region:

This Evening and Tonight

A largely dry evening for most with some clear spells, though perhaps showery outbreaks of rain in the far southwest. Turning cloudier from the east with patchy light rain and drizzle overnight, petering out by dawn. Breezy around coasts. Minimum temperature 6 °C.

Sunday

Any drizzle soon easing to leave a drier day with sunny spells, the best of the sunshine in the east. Feeling pleasant, but turning colder overnight with a frost. Maximum temperature 13 °C.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday

Dry and settled with sunny periods. Frosty nights, but feeling pleasantly warm in the sunshine and light winds by day. Possibly turning somewhat cloudier on Wednesday but probably staying dry.
