Frenkie de Jong makes plea to in-demand team-mate Matthijs de Ligt

Frenkie de Jong has made no secret of his desire to convince team-mate Matthijs de Ligt to join him at Barcelona .

The talented young pair have enjoyed a stunning season at Ajax and De Jong has already agreed a deal to head to the Nou Camp in the summer.

But De Ligt is still the subject of an intense transfer battle between the Catalan club and Paris Saint-Germain with the race for his signature reduced to a two-horse race.

After leading the Netherlands to a 3-1 win over England in extra-time in the Nations League semi-finals, De Jong opened up on the future of his close friend and team-mate.

He insists he cannot influence De Ligt's decision - but has made it clear he wants to continue playing together for Barcelona.

"I hope De Ligt will come with me to Barça, I hope so," De Jong said.

"Of course we have talked about his future, but I am clear that it is a matter that he and his family must decide.

"What I can not do is influence his decision. It is something that he must resolve in the next few days with his own. He knows what I would like."

De Ligt turned from zero to hero in Guimaraes, heading in the Dutch equaliser having conceded a penalty when he fouled Marcus Rashford earlier in the game.

He also commented on the win after the match, but did not touch on where his future lies.

De Ligt stated: "The penalty action was very silly and I know it very well, I received a ball from De Roon and my intention was to play the ball with Cillessen, but I was late.

"It was very stupid, because I should not have sent the ball to the goalkeeper. I am very demanding of myself and I had to compensate for that error."
