England’s first Test since their ill-fated Ashes tour has so far been a typically topsy-turvy affair for the hosts, a cavalcade of falling wickets with the inclement weather intruding on play. Although Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes kept their jobs as head coach and captain after the 4-1 drubbing in Australia, that trip was surely the end of the chapter for the all-action brand of cricket they built together. There has been talk of evolving and sharpening up their methods. A complete change of identity would be a huge ask, leaving some to question how much of a shift fans will see this summer. Day three may offer some clues, with James Wallace and Daniel Gallan helming our over-by-over coverage. Simon Burnton and Andy Bull report from Lord’s.

To Epsom and the the crown jewel of Flat racing, the chance for the crop of the sport’s top three-year-old colts to seize glory and stamp their names on Thoroughbred history. There really is no other race quite like the Derby, with Tony Paley helming the live blog on the big day and Greg Wood reporting from the thronging Surrey venue. They’re off in the big race at 4pm and they will be bringing all the colour and action. There are storylines aplenty to unpick: can anyone prevent Aidan O’Brien from claiming a record-extending 12th win with Benvenuto Cellini? The Chester Vase winner is the master of Ballydoyle’s big play on Saturday, with nine of his dozen victories achieved in the last 14 years. If the ground was quick, Benvenuto Cellini would have too much class, but with the rain having arrived in recent days it is no great surprise the money has come for Pierre Bonnard, another of O’Brien’s four runners, and he might come of age over a testing mile and a half.

Roland Garros will witness a first-time grand slam winner on Saturday when the Russian eighth seed, Mirra Andreeva, takes to the court to face Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska. The 114-ranked Chwalinska is in sensational form and has rolled through nine consecutive victories across three weeks, losing only one set. She’s now just a victory away from becoming the first player to win the French Open as a qualifier. All eyes will be on Philippe-Chatrier court. Katy Murrells is on live blog duty and Tumaini Carayol will be reporting in Paris.

Kimi Antonelli has emerged victorious in the past four races and the Italian prodigy is 43 points clear of his Mercedes teammate George Russell, who won the season opener in Melbourne. But Monaco’s unique challenge and relatively slower corners are likely to level the playing field considerably and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc is poised to end their domination on his the streets where he grew up. Leclerc, who has driven for Ferrari since 2019, has a special connection with the unforgiving Monte Carlo layout having watched drivers such as, er, Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton roaring to victory in the iconic race. The 28-year-old has been on pole position three times in the past five years, won in 2024 and rolled in second last year. Philip Cornwall steers the lap-by-lap coverage, while Giles Richards files from Monte Carlo.

Scotland are back at the World Cup for the first time since 1998, but this time it is about more than qualification. The exhilarating 4-2 win over Denmark at Hampden Park in November meant the Scots topped their qualifying group to reach the finals in North America, where they will face Haiti and Morocco in Foxborough, near Boston, and Brazil in Miami. Friendly defeats against Japan at Hampden and Côte d’Ivoire at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium in March, both 1-0, brought back a touch of reality. A 4-1 win against the World Cup debutants Curaçao on 30 May threw up a new face in 19-year-old Tyler Fletcher, the son of the former Scotland captain Darren, as he made his debut as a second-half substitute. The final match before the competition starts is against Bolivia in New Jersey, which should see any of Steve Clarke’s experimentation, tweaking or tinkering come to an end. England touched down in the United States on Monday to begin preparations in sweltering Florida, with three friendlies lined up before the buildup continues at their Kansas City base. Thomas Tuchel’s squad are hoping to end 60 years of hurt by winning the trophy, but this will be their biggest challenge yet, given the climate and logistics involved in a tournament spanning three countries and four time zones. England face New Zealand at Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium, with their final warm-up against and Costa Rica to follow on Wednesday. The Three Lions have also added Miami United, who play in the fourth tier of US football, at Palm Beach Gardens, to their schedule for an unofficial match at some point in between. They last played in Miami in a goalless draw with Honduras before their ill-fated 2014 World Cup in Brazil. There’s a one-off County Championship derby clash at the Oval, with the hosts looking to rebound from a big loss against Yorkshire by an innings and 127 runs at Headingley. Their record reads won one, lost one and drawn four before they face their home counties neighbours. Hampshire make the trip up the M3 to Kennington after drawing with top-ranked Notts but remain rock bottom of Division One after six games and a single victory. Tanya Aldred has over-by-over coverage.

Tim de Lisle and Daniel Gallan are on deck for day four of the first Test at Lord’s. And perhaps it will be a chance to see how well Ben Stokes’ reinvention is faring. The England captain has performed a long list of jobs for his country over the years and is now set for yet another renewal. After diminishing returns with the bat over the past 18 months he has agreed to drop down to No 7 in the order, swapping with Jamie Smith, and is also considering revising his role as a potential opening bowler at times. Seizing the moment is Ollie Robinson. After his Ashes struggles, the England quick is bringing some skill and control to an attack that became increasingly ragged down under, completing a five-wicket haul on day two, with figures of five for 39 as New Zealand were skittled for 113.

The Canadian Grand Prix spiced up the title race as the Mercedes teammates George Russell and Kimi Antonelli battled wheel-to-wheel for lap after lap, only for an engine failure on the latter’s car to spoil the show. Yet Sunday’s grand prix may see an end to the Silver Arrows’ dominance for now, with the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton setting the race pace. Their cars have a smaller turbocharger, which might give them a quicker kick of power out of the many slow corners. For the first time, there is a de facto speed limiter reducing electrical power when the car is travelling at more than 200kph (124 mph) on safety grounds, and the new-for-2026 moving aerodynamic parts for straight-line speed won’t be used in Monaco. Essentially, the track is being treated like one big corner. Mercedes, Red Bull and McLaren have fixed miniature “winglets” on their cars for extra downforce instead of the components that would usually move the wings. French Open men’s singles final live

Adriano Panatta was expecting to award the French Open trophy to Jannik Sinner 50 years after his own triumph in Paris. Turns out he may still hand over the Coupe des Mousquetaires to a fellow Italian after the men’s singles final on Sunday after being invited by Roland Garros to take care of the honours on the anniversary of his 1976 triumph. Despite Sinner’s stunning loss in the second round, Italy is assured to have a player in the championship match since Flavio Cobolli faced his compatriot Matteo Arnaldi in Friday’s semi-finals. An Italian man has not raised the singles trophy in Paris since the 75-year-old Panatta, the only player ever to defeat Björn Borg at Roland Garros.
