Free camp to help teens choose career post-Leaving Certificate set up online

A summer camp to help teenagers choose what they want to do after leaving school has moved online this year - and it’s totally free.

Discover University is a free summer camp, delivered by the Early Learning Initiative (ELI), that is held in the National College of Ireland (NCI) every June, and aims to give young people aged 14-17 the opportunity to experience a taste of life at NCI and to see college as a very possible part of their future.

Youngsters can choose from one of four subjects to study throughout the programme; Business, Computing, Early Childhood Education and Psychology.

They attend lectures and complete group work in their chosen subject, under the guidance of NCI lecturers and student team leaders.

There are also a variety of workshops, talks and extra-curricular activities, all combining to encourage young people to develop skills they will need to succeed on any life-path they choose.

One former student said: “When we worked in groups, we were sharing, co-operating and communicating.

“We were also meeting new people.

“Everything was on point.”
