Frank Lampard's careful reply over Chelsea fee for Kai Havertz as boss confirms transfer stance

Frank Lampard refused to be drawn on reports that Bayer Leverkusen's asking price for Kai Havertz does not meet Chelsea's evaluation of the Germany international.

The head coach would neither confirm nor deny the story that the Bundesliga side are asking for more money than what the West Londoners have offered as he addressed the media to preview Saturday evening's trip to Sheffield United, instead reiterating that his sole focus is on finishing this season strongly and he will address transfer issues at the end of the campaign.

Chelsea sit third in the table but could still slip out of the Champions League places, while they must face in-form Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final next weekend on top of seeking to overcome a 3-0 deficit to Bayern Munich in the Champions League round of 16 in early August.

Asked about Havertz, Lampard said: "Unfortunately it's another answer from me that that is not something I want to broach at this moment in time.

"My focus is completely on the game. So I don't want to give you any ifs buts or maybes for the summer, my focus has to be on the here and now."

Chelsea have already signed Hakim Ziyech from Ajax and Havertz's international team-mate Timo Werner from RB Leipzig for a combined £90million ahead of next season.

Both officially became Chelsea players on July 1 but will not be eligible to feature for the club until the start of next season.

The club remain keen on signing a new left back, with the potential that they will also strengthen at centre back.
