Frank Lampard provides update on Tammy Abraham contract amid reports of Chelsea extension clause

Chelsea have activated a one-year extension to Tammy Abraham's contract, easing concerns over negotiations around a new deal for the leading goalscorer.

The striker, who came off the bench to score for the first time since January in Tuesday evening's nervy 3-2 win away to Crystal Palace, now has three years remaining on his current agreement rather than two.

Frank Lampard would not go into details during his press conference to preview Saturday's trip to Sheffield United but did reiterate that there is no rush regarding the 22-year-old academy graduate's future at Stamford Bridge.

Abraham's extension was first reported by the Telegraph.

"I don't want to get into clauses, that could open me up to many questions but I've said he's not at a critical stage of his contract," Lampard said after confirming Billy Gilmour will be out for four months following knee surgery. "He needs to focus on playing and there will be plenty of time to sit down after [the season ends].

Earlier this week Lampard said that Abraham should not be distracted by a new deal having fallen behind Olivier Giroud in the pecking order but negotiations earlier this season had looked like stalling.

While the extension would buy both parties more time, negotiations around a new and improved contract are still expected to take place soon.

The club has tied down almost all of their young players to new deals this season and have already signed Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, though neither are eligible to play until the start of next season.
