Frank Lampard on what Timo Werner has said to leave Chelsea coaching staff impressed

Frank Lampard has been impressed by the attitude of all of Chelsea's new signings over the past couple of weeks but it is perhaps the application of Timo Werner that has stood out most.

Tomorrow afternoon the Germany striker, a £47million signing from RB Leipzig, comes up against Virgil van Dijk and a Liverpool defence that conceded just 33 times last season and he is already promising that he needs only a couple of weeks to adapt to the differences of English football.

While Lampard is stressing the need for patience for new signings to get used to the nuances of Premier League football, that Werner spoke with relish of the physical challenge presented by Premier League defences after last Monday's win over Brighton was music to the head coach's ears.

"It follows on from the Timo Werner I spoke to when he signed and the way he’s been since he started working here," Lampard said.

"He’s an incredibly talented player. He is robust, so I’ve no doubt he can handle the Premier League and the size of the opposition.

"And he’s very low maintenance. He comes in, he trains, he works hard, he lives right and he wants to come here and be a success. And he said that in his post-match statements.

"All the players coming from foreign leagues have to be given some time to adjust to the league. I’m confident they will adjust quickly. We’ll work towards that.

As for facing Liverpool, Lampard added: "I’d like to see Timo up against what is a fantastic defence, Liverpool at the weekend. I’ve no worries of how he will approach it, in terms of the size or speed or strength or Liverpool. I’m sure Timo will back himself and give everything."
