Frank Lampard baffled by added time decision during Chelsea's Champions League clash with Ajax

Frank Lampard has expressed his bemusement with the decision to add just four minutes onto the end of Chelsea's dramatic 4-4 thriller against Ajax in the Champions League.

In a match that will live long in the memory, the Blues fought back from 4-1 down to secure a draw and also saw a late goal from Cesar Azpilicueta ruled out for a handball in the build-up.

With that VAR call chewing into the time coming after a crazy few minutes that saw Ajax issued two red cards and concede a penalty, the general consensus was that a huge chunk of time would be added on after the ninety minutes were up.

However, the fourth official raised the board showing just four minutes of time were to be played, which led to confusion for the fans in the stadium and the BT Sport commentators.

Asked about the decision after the match, Lampard was clearly baffled by the decision and admitted he expected to see at least double the time that was shown.

“That was incredible. You have to be careful with the refs and what you say to them because they’ll tell you to go inside,” he said to BT Sport.

“I think the actual double red card and penalty felt like four minutes on it’s own, then there is the goals and another VAR incident, so I was expecting somewhere towards 10, maybe eight, so I just don’t know where it came from.”

Chelsea currently sit level on seven points with Ajax and Valencia at the top of Group H, ahead of their final group-stage matches against the Spaniards and French outfit Lille.
