Four Weddings and a Funeral Red Nose Day special sequel 'confirmed'

Four Weddings and a Funeral is reportedly set to make a return to screens as part of a Red Nose Day special next year.

Stars of the 1994 hit film, Hugh Grant, Andie MacDowell, Kristin Scott Thomas and Rowan Atkinson, are believed to have been confirmed for the short film.

According to Variety, the film will welcome back original writer Richard Curtis and director Mike Newell.

It is believed that the story will pick up 25 years after the first movie ended and features a fifth wedding.

The publication reported that Curtis has teased that the returning characters will face a series of hurdles ahead of the additional wedding.

He said: “We’re all definitely older – I suspect no wiser. It’s been really enjoyable working out what’s happened to all the characters and now they get back together for the fifth wedding, where, as usual, not everything will go as planned.”

The sequel is expected to come two years after Red Nose Day Actually, which conveyed a short follow-up to Curtis’ Love Actually, based on the 2003 romantic comedy.

Standard Online has contacted representatives of the charity for comment.

The reports come after Curtis told how his first choice for the lead role in the original Four Weddings and a Funeral was Alan Rickman – not Grant.

Curtis admitted that despite finding Grant “annoying, too good-looking, and a bit posh”, he was outvoted on the decision.

Speaking at Cheltenham Literary Festival, earlier this year, Curtis said: “We auditioned about 70 people for Hugh’s part. Eventually it was down to Hugh and Alan Rickman.

“I went for Alan but I was outvoted. I just thought Hugh was a bit annoying, too good-looking and a bit posh.

“I was right about all of those things but he was also very good.”
