Four dead in Manhattan shooting - everything we know so far

A police officer was among four people shot and killed inside a New York City office building yesterday evening local time.

CCTV footage shows the shooter pulling up to a Park Avenue tower in Midtown Manhattan in a BMW before entering and opening fire on Monday, July 28.

While information, including the identities of some of the casualties, is still being revealed to the public, NYPD has shared some details of what happened. Here’s what we know so far.

When did the Manhattan shooting take place?

At around 7pm local time on Monday, a shooter entered 345 Park Avenue while openly carrying an M4 rifle.

As soon as he entered the building, he opened fire, hitting an NYPD officer and aiming at a woman who took cover behind a pillar. He then reportedly let a woman leave the lift, before going to the 33rd floor, which houses the offices of Rudin Building Management. Once there, the shooter opened fire once again.

The shooter then went to a stairwell and was later found dead with an "apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound", NYPD officials.

Where is Midtown Manhattan and 345 Park Avenue?

Midtown Manhattan refers to the section of New York City between 14th street and 59th street. It is the central part of the island, and is home to the top tourist attractions in the city, including Times Square, The Empire State Building, Rockefeller Centre and St Patrick’s Cathedral.

345 Park Avenue, on 52nd street between Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue, is at the higher end of Midtown.

The building offices Rudin Management Company, as well as the National Football League (NFL) offices and financial firms.

What do we know about the shooter?

New York City officials have named their primary suspect as Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old man from Nevada.

According to the NYPD investigators, but officials did make mention of a "documented mental health history" in the press conference.

According to the FBI, an initial background check "has not revealed any information about this subject".

Police found a revolver with magazines of ammunition in the BMW, as well as a prescription in Tamura’s name. He has a licence to carry firearms in Nevada.

Investigators on the case believe that Tamura may have entered the wrong office, having actually intended to shoot the NFL office, which is accessed by different elevator banks within the same building.

A note found on his body indicated that the shooter had a grievance against the NFL over an unsubstantiated claim that he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy – a brain condition from repeated head trauma.

However, he never seemed to play for the NFL, but had played football in high school in California over a decade prior.

“He did have a note on him. The note alluded to that he felt he had CTE, a known brain injury for those who participate in contact sports. He appeared to have blamed the NFL for his injury,” Adams said in an interview with CBS’s “This Morning”.

How many people were killed?

Four people have been killed, including one police officer. Little is yet known about the three civilians, other than that they are two men and a woman.

A third man has been seriously wounded and is reportedly “fighting for his life” in a nearby hospital, according to New York mayor Eric Adams.

What do we know about the police officer who was shot?

The NYPD officer who was shot has been named as Didarul Islam, a father of two whose wife is pregnant with a third child.

NYPD has said Islam “represented the very best of our department” in a tribute.

“He was protecting New Yorkers from danger when his life was tragically cut short today,” the department said on X. “We join in prayer during this time of incomprehensible pain. We will forever honor his legacy.”

During the press conference, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said that two officers on the scene were assigned as paid detail, when asked about their presence. This is when companies can hire NYPD officers for extra security.
