Two men and two women have been arrested on the Gold Coast after a man was shot in the leg during an alleged bid to extort a luxury car.

The hired black 2020 Mercedes Benz was allegedly stolen from its 27-year-old male driver on Thursday night, by two men the driver met with at Budds Beach.

Police said that around noon on Friday, two other men - one whom the driver knew - lured him to a high-rise unit at Southport to negotiate payment for return of the vehicle.

An altercation allegedly took place and the driver was shot in the upper right leg.

The victim and the two men left the apartment along with a female associate. The injured man fled while the others drove away in the stolen Mercedes.

Police were called to a nearby grocery store around 12.30pm on Friday where the injured man had presented. He was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

Officers later found the Mercedes at Acacia Ave in Surfers Paradise around 2pm.

A 29-year-old man and a 25-year-old man and two women at the address were arrested.

Crimes scenes have been declared at the Southport unit, the grocery store and the Acacia Ave address, as police continue to investigate.
