Formula One's eight-race European schedule WOULD constitute world championship, says Ross Brawn

The 2020 Formula One world champion could conceivably be crowned after the upcoming eight European races, according to managing director Ross Brawn.

The FIA’s sporting code states the F1 World Championship must span three continents but that could be revised for the new-look season if necessary.

Brawn told Autosport: “In theory, the eight European races will constitute a world championship.”

The season is scheduled to kick off in Austria on July 5 with back-to-back race weekends followed by Hungary, another double-header at Silverstone, and races in Spain, Belgium and Italy.

F1 bosses are still planning 15 to 18 races in total and hope to unveil plans for an extended calendar into December at the end of this month.

And Brawn said that a return to Europe “is an option if we can’t have the overseas or flyaway races we’d like to have” because of the coronavirus pandemic.
