Formula E Mexico win the "dream start" for Citroen, says Nick Cassidy

Nick Cassidy branded the Mexico City E-Prix as the “dream start” for Formula E newcomer Citroen after winning in just its second race.

The French marque is new to the championship for the 2025/26 season and it already made a good start by taking third with Cassidy at the Sao Paulo opener.

But then the 31-year-old went even better by winning at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, despite starting down in 13th, as a strategic masterclass brought Cassidy into contention.

Not only did he save his battery arguably better than any of his rivals, but he also used an offset strategy in activating a six-minute Attack Mode of his eight in total late on - this went against the usual two sets of four.

It ultimately gave the New Zealander his 12th series victory, two shy of the record held by Sebastien Buemi and Mitch Evans, and he now leads the championship as he chases a maiden title.

“Wow, for the team, for Citroen - what an entrance to Formula E. This has been a dream start, very, very happy for everyone,” said Cassidy, who finished on the Mexico podium with Edoardo Mortara and reigning champion Oliver Rowland.

“It was quite different for me today. Don't know if I've ever taken a six minute and a two. It's quite rare, but it seemed to work. These two guys beside me were very, very strong as well.

“I wasn't sure if in the last laps I had kind of enough to hold on, I was almost kind of thinking I might end up fourth, but I was happy with that. Strategy wise, sometimes it goes your way and sometimes it doesn't, today it did.”

If stats are anything to go by then history is on Cassidy’s side: the last three Mexico City E-Prix winners have gone on to win that year’s Formula E world title.

The series veteran was therefore asked about his championship ambitions and although he naturally batted those questions away, he does have confidence for the season.

That’s particularly because of the progress Cassidy has seen at Citroen since pre-season testing in Valencia, claiming it’s the most he’s seen across the three teams he’s had in Formula E.

“In Valencia I was quite comfortable with qualifying pace, with development and new things that we were working on, that I was trying to achieve with this car and what we had,” said Cassidy, whose team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne finished eighth in Mexico.

“We've probably had the most development in these three months that I've ever seen or been part of in Formula E - so that's been really impressive.

“Sao Paulo was kind of the same, not saying too much, it was almost like a new system in the race for me so it was an unknown, the first that we'd run it since testing and then we were able to refine that for today.

“So I felt like I was a lot stronger today than I was in Sao Paulo, so hopefully that's positive for the rest of the year.”
