Former Sunderland loanee Jonny Williams opens up on 'unhappy' loan spell

Jonny Williams has given an insight into his 'unhappy' loan spell at the Stadium of Light.

The Wales international joined the Black Cats on loan from Crystal Palace, during their stint in the Championship in the 2017-18 season.

However, the midfielder made just 12 league appearances as a result of injuries, and Chris Coleman's side were relegated to League One at the end of the campaign.

The 27-year-old, who is now a free agent after being released by Cardiff, was one of a number of players caught on camera as part of the Sunderland 'Til I Die Netflix series.

The cameras captured Williams on his road to recovery with the Welshman struggling with life on Wearside.

Speaking to The Athletic, Williams said: “Yeah, I wasn’t at my best in the Sunderland documentary, off the pitch anyway.

"I’m sure a lot of people have seen it, but I wasn’t quite happy in myself.

"I didn’t have mental health issues, I just wasn’t happy. It’s fine for footballers not to be happy sometimes.

“Footballers do have emotions and they came out in the series, I didn’t get to see it beforehand so I was as shocked as everyone else to see what unfolded in the series.”
