Former Shelbourne, St Pat's and Dundalk striker Tony Izzi dies aged 48

Former Shelbourne, St Pat's and Dundalk striker Tony Izzi has died at the age of 48.

Shels paid tribute to the Dublin-born former Lazio youth player after confirming the sad news today, having previously reported that he had taken ill in Italy.

"Shelbourne FC is saddened to hear the death of Shels legend Antonio Izzi, who scored a famous goal against Karpaty Lviv, to qualify us for the UEFA Cup Winners Cup in 1993," tweeted the club's official account.

"We’d like to send our condolences to his family and friends".

Izzi's goal at Tolka Park helped secure a 3-1 home leg victory against the Ukrainian outfit as Shels progressed to the next round of the Cup Winners Cup.

Izzi won the Division One Golden Boot twice with Cobh Ramblers, in 1997 and '99, and also played for Limerick and Athlone Town.
