Former Scots footballer dies in hospital after horror crash on Scots road as tributes paid to 'a legend'

A former Scots footballer has died in hospital following a horror crash on a Scots road.

Douglas Cooper Summers, known as Dougal, has passed away following the accident on Meethill Road in Peterhead at around 11am on Wednesday, August 17.

We told how the 78-year-old was rushed to hospital in a critical condition as he fought for his life. Tragically, he has now died.

The single vehicle smash involved a blue Ford Fiesta and happened following what has been described as a "medical matter".

Dougal was an ex-footballer in Scotland and played for several locals clubs in the region including Peterhead FC, where he has been described as a legend in the 60s and 70s. Following the devastating news tributes have flooded in and Dougal has been described as "a legend, a great footballer and a good friend".

Peterhead Football Club lead the tributes as they posted two pictures of Dougal in his playing days.

In a statement the club said: "All at PFC are saddened to hear of the passing of Recreation Park Legend Dougal Summers. Dougal is pictured here in his first season with Peterhead as part of the team that beat Elgin City in a tremendous 4-1 Highland League Cup Final victory in 1965-66.

"On behalf of Rodger Morrison, the Board and all at PFC, we would like to send on our condolences to Dougal's family - he will be greatly missed."

Local Facebook page The Only Way Is Peterhead, confirmed the news as they wrote: "Dougal Summers was well known in the town and was a gifted footballer for several local teams including Peterhead FC. Condolences to his friends and family."

A number of tributes have been paid on social media. Allan Chalmers said: "So sad to hear of Dougals passing. A great footballer in his time and good friend. We lumped fish together for years, a toff who will be sadly missed."

Lori Hurhangee said: "Thinking of all the family in their loss of such a lovely man x"

David Strachan said: "One word - Legend. Thanks for the memories Dougal."

Peter Cameron added: "Saddened to hear this – brilliant man. Thinking of family at this sad time."

Marian Duthie said: "Dougal was always so kind and pleasant to speak to, and Ally MacMillan added: "A real gentleman."

A picture taken from the scene following the accident showed the multi-emergency response with police, fire crews and medics in attendance following the crash.

A Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed: “On Monday, August 22, police were made aware of the death of a 78-year-old man at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. The cause of death was a medical matter and there is no further police involvement.”
