Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were reportedly labelled as the “former Duke and Duchess of Sussex” by a New York Police Department officer ahead of their 2022 visit to the United Nations for Mandela Day, according to a screenshot of what’s claimed to be an internal email.
The message, which has been widely circulated on social media, shows an NYPD officer referencing a call from City Hall about “the former Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s visit to NYC on July 18th”, reported Geo News. While the authenticity of the email hasn’t been officially confirmed by the NYPD, that hasn’t stopped royal watchers from jumping on it with some poking fun at the royal couple and suggesting it reflects what many wish was already true.
The term “former” got royalists buzzing because, technically, Harry and Meghan still hold their titles. Despite stepping back from royal duties in 2020, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain just that — titles that haven’t been stripped, regardless of how controversial their departure from royal life has been. So the NYPD officer’s choice of words reflected either a misunderstanding or a casual disregard for royal formality.
The email, supposedly obtained via a Freedom of Information request, allegedly came from an officer trying to coordinate with Torchstone Global, thought to be a private security or consultancy firm. It was part of preparations for the couple’s visit to New York, where they attended the United Nations’ Nelson Mandela International Day on 18 July 2022.
Harry took the spotlight during the event, delivering the keynote speech inside the UN General Assembly Hall. He spoke about the enduring legacy of Nelson Mandela and touched on urgent global topics such as climate change, the war in Ukraine, and what he described as a rollback of constitutional rights in the United States. His speech aimed to draw connections between Mandela’s struggle for justice and the ongoing challenges faced across the globe today.
The supposed email slip-up reignited calls from some corners of the public and online royal followers, particularly supporters of King Charles and Prince William, for the Sussexes to be officially stripped of their titles. These calls have been ongoing ever since the couple distanced themselves from the Royal Family and relocated to the US.
But despite the noise, the titles remain intact. What the email may show more than anything is just how far removed Harry and Meghan now are from the royal machinery. So much so, it seems even US officials aren’t quite sure how to address them anymore.
While the email may or may not have been a genuine mistake, it was enough to spark another round of online debate over the couple’s status, relevance, and role post-Megxit. And for those following every twist in the saga, this little administrative gaffe turned into yet another symbol of the complicated relationship between the Sussexes and the institutions they left behind.
