Former referee gives expert view on controversial Manchester United penalty against West Ham

West Ham can feel hard done-by for Manchester United's opening goal against them this evening (Saturday) at Old Trafford, according to a former Premier league referee.

Working for BT Sport as a refereeing expert pundit Peter Walton gave his opinion on the decision in the immediate aftermath.

The Red Devils were given the penalty in the 18th minute by referee Graham Scott for a collision between Robert Snodgrass and Juan Mata.

Revealed: the West Ham striker who has not travelled to face Manchester United

The Manchester United midfielder was on the edge of the West Ham box as the ball broke to him, as he went to control the ball Snodgrass takcled him, knocking him over in the process.

Scott gave the penalty almost immediately, having been relatively near to the action, but after seeing the replay Walton believed that the wrong decision had been made.

On commentary he said: "I dont think it was a penalty kick looking at it again.

"I think two players have come together there and Snodgrass has every right to go for the ball.

"Graham scott has given the penalty kick and very definitely but looking at it again I have my doubts."

Walton wasn't the only member of the BT Sport team to question the decision, Steve McManaman also doubted whether it was correct, expressing his disappointment with the call, saying 'oh no, no, initially I thought no' when the decision was made.

Earlier in the game the Hammers had a golden chance to take the lead when Felipe Anderson turned the ball into the back of David de Gea's net but he was flagged offside, despite Diego Dalot appeaing to play him onside.
