Former Rangers and Hamilton Accies defender appears as trialist for fifth tier East Kilbride in friendly

Former Hamilton Accies defender Matty Shiels turned out as a trialist for Lowland League East Kilbride this afternoon, as the Lowland League side held League One Queen of the South to a 1-1 draw.

The 22-year-old left-back, who started his career at Rangers, was a second half substitute and impressed as Kilby kicked-off life under new manager Mick Kennedy.

However, the K-Park gaffer says EK fans shouldn't get their hopes up of a deal being done.

Shiels is determined to stay full-time after turning down a deal to stay at Hamilton Accies over the summer and is not expected to pen a deal at the fifth tier side.

It comes after his former Accies team-mate Reegan Mimnaugh - who played the first half for Queens - was set to sign for EK last week and turned them down in favour of the Doonhamers at the eleventh hour.

Asked if he would be signing Shiels, Kennedy told Lanarkshire Live Sport : "Matty came in and trained with us last week. He is a good lad and his agent is a friend of mine.

"We gave him some game time today but I think Matty prefers to stay full-time.

"It was probably just circumstances that dictated it, us being a bit light on bodies today and Matty needing some game time.

"I think you see his quality today for 45 minutes. I thought he was outstanding at left centre half."

East Kilbride fought back from Gavin Reilly's early opener at K-Park to earn a draw, thanks to captain Liam Brown's penalty after 31 minutes.

They now host West fo Scotland League side St Cadoc's next Saturday, kick-off 2pm.
