Former QPR star Joey Barton charged with actual bodily harm by police

Former Manchester City and Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton has been charged with actual bodily harm by police after an incident at Barnsley in April.

The 36-year-old, currently manager of League One outfit Fleetwood Town, was involved in an incident in the tunnel following a match against Barnsley at Oakwell in April, where opposing manager Daniel Stendel was reportedly left with facial injuries.

Barton, who sees his Fleetwood side clash with Port Vale this evening on a pre-season friendly, will now appear in court in October after being charged by police.

He has been bailed until 9 October, when he will appear at Barnsley Magistrates Court charged with a section 4 assault.

A statement from South Yorkshire police said: 'A man has been charged following an incident at Barnsley Football Club in April 2019.

'Joseph Barton, 36, of Widnes, has been charged with actual bodily harm contrary to section 47 assault and has been bailed to appear before Barnsley Magistrates Court on Wednesday 9 October 2019.

'On Saturday 13 April 2019, a man was left with facial injuries after an incident in the club tunnel around 5pm, following the conclusion of Barnsley's match against Fleetwood Town.'
