Former QMC doctor guilty of sexual assault against two patients

A former doctor at the Queen's Medical Centre has been described as a "skilful and brazen liar" after being been found guilty of five counts of sexual assault against two patients.

Former emergency department doctor Tayabb Shah, 39, formerly of Embley Road, Sherwood and now of no fixed address, was sentenced to four-and-a-half years at Nottingham Crown Court on Monday (February 7).

Shah, a married father-of-two, will serve at least half of that sentence in prison, and has been placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely.

The jury heard evidence at a trial held over last week after Shah denied he deliberately targeted two vulnerable people after straying into an acute ward while working as a junior locum doctor and on a break at the QMC.

He was found guilty of touching the genitalia of two males, and a sex act

After deliberating for five hours and 47 minutes, the jury concluded Shah was guilty of all five counts against two different patients, and all counts were decided unanimously.

When delivering the sentencing and addressing Shah, Judge James Sampson said: "You were a doctor at the QMC when you sexually abused two males and misinformed them it was a medical examination.

"It was a sham, you were not on the ward you should have been working on.

"Both victims were highly vulnerable, one of whom had mental health problems, and the other was in hospital for an anti-depressant overdose.

"Your behaviour was predatory.

"It undermines the trust in the medical profession generally, and particularly for these two men who have been caused immense distress.

"Your medical career in this country is now over.

"Your performance in interviews demonstrates that you are a skilful and brazen liar, but the jury has seen through you.

"You have a wife and two children, but you have shown no remorse.

"You will be on the sex offenders register indefinitely, and will not be allowed to ever work with vulnerable adults or children again."

Four counts of sexual assault sentenced to two-and-a-half years are to be served concurrently, with one sexual offence of two years to be served consecutively.

That gives the total of a four-and-a-half year sentence.
