Former Premier League star agrees with 'fireman' Jesse Marsch's Southampton 'strategy'

Former Premier League striker Jan Aage Fjortoft believes former Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch has made the right decision to not become manager of Southampton so late on in the season.

The American was sacked by the Whites just under a year after he took over from Marcelo Bielsa following a poor run of results but was offered a new position days after leaving Elland Road when Nathan Jones was sacked by the Saints.

But Marsch chose to not take the job after negotiations appeared to break down between the two parties, despite reports claiming he was 'set' for the role at St. Mary's Stadium.

Fjortoft now claims that the decision by Marsch to not take the role was the right one, and that he avoided becoming a 'fireman' - likely in reference to the state of the Saint at the moment.

He wrote: "Agree with Marsch’s strategy. He doesn’t want to be a "fireman". Fair enough!"

Southampton's current interim boss Ruben Selles led Saints to a win over Chelsea and will be hoping to remain in charge for their trip to Elland Road to face Leeds United this weekend.
