Former petrol station in Stretford could become coffee shop with drive-thru

A former petrol station and car wash could become a coffee shop with a drive-thru.

The site at 1011 Chester Road (A56) in Stretford used to have four petrol and diesel pumps on it, but now only a hand car wash operates there.

The land underneath the station has seven large petrol or diesel storage tanks buried in it - which led authorities to examine the land for contamination.

During testing they found higher levels of the flammable chemical methyl tertbutyl ether than is permitted for safety reasons.

As a result, work to remove or reduce the impact of the substance will be necessary on the site; depending on whether or not planning permission for the new coffee shop is approved by Trafford Council.

It is not yet known which coffee shop chain or independent retailer will take over the site once it's completed.

A planning application for the site was submitted to the council on Wednesday January 8 from developers JMS Planning & Development Ltd.

The council is yet to decide whether or not it will grant planning permission for the site proposals.
