Former PetroChina Executive Detained in Corruption Probe

What’s new: A former vice president from the division of leading oil driller China National Petroleum Corp. (PetroChina) developing the country’s massive Changqing oil field has been detained as part of a corruption investigation, several sources told Caixin.

Li Anqi’s detention is related to the case involving Tang Xin, the oil field’s chief dispatcher, who was detained in January this year on suspicion of corruption, Caixin understands.

What’s the background: Sources told Caixin this marks the second time that Li has been involved in such an investigation, which are mostly related to a years-long campaign to root out corruption in government and big state-owned companies under President Xi Jinping.

Li was demoted after the first investigation. The latest investigation is just one of many involving mid-level managers in recent years at Changqing, China’s largest oil field that produces both oil and gas and spans several provincial-level regions in Northwest China.
