Former Packers LB Blake Martinez agrees to sign 3-year, $30M deal with Giants

Former Green Bay Packers linebacker Blake Martinez has agreed to sign a three-year deal worth a little over $30 million with the New York Giants, according to Adam Caplan of Sirius XM NFL Radio.

Martinez’s departure from Green Bay was expected after the Packers signed veteran linebacker Christian Kirksey to a two-year deal earlier Monday.

A fourth-round pick out of Stanford in 2016, Martinez played in 61 games and made 57 starts for the Packers over the last four seasons. He became a production machine, tallying 512 tackles, 10 sacks, 29 tackles for losses and three interceptions between 2016 and 2019. He played almost 98 percent of the defense’s snaps and led the NFL in combined tackles over the last three seasons.

A chance to test unrestricted free agency allowed Martinez to find a linebacker-needy team willing to pay over $10 million per year for his services.

The Giants were looking for linebacker help after cutting Alec Ogletree last month.

The Packers are not scheduled to face the Giants in the regular season in 2020.

The Packers signed Kirksey and offensive tackle Rick Wagner on Monday. Both were street free agents, so the Packers are currently in line to receive a top compensatory pick for losing Martinez in 2021.
