The NFL Top 100 countdown has come to a conclusion for 2020, and as always, there were some notable former Ohio State players appearing prominently in the countdown.
Yesterday, the list made it into the brightest of stars category and there’s one former Buckeye that shown brightly than any other as a top-five NFL player heading into this season. You might know of him. His name is Michael Thomas, and he is arguably the best receiver in the game today.
When the rankings were revealed, he came in at a cool No. 5 overall behind just Lamar Jackson (1), Russell Wilson (2), Aaron Donald (3), and Patrick Mahomes (4).
The fact that Thomas has become such a superstar and on a potential path to the Pro Football Hall of Fame is a surprise to many. He’s always had an unparalleled work ethic, but never really became a superstar at Ohio State despite some highlight-worthy plays.
However, once he reached the NFL, Thomas continued to work hard, became a favorite target of Saints’ quarterback Drew Brees, and off he went, soaring to arguably the best first five years of any receiver in NFL history.
There’s a lot of folks that argue for Julio Jones or other receivers as better, but that’s because the film says they look faster. The reality is that Thomas catches almost everything thrown his way, has a huge catch radius, and gets open at will because of his great route running. Leading the league in catches two-straight years counts for something as well.
