Former Nottingham Forest striker is Chile hero in Copa America

Former Nottingham Forest forward Ben Brereton is quickly becoming a hero with Chile.

The 22-year-old scored in the Copa America to help his team to a 1-0 over Bolivia in Brazil.

His matchwinner on Friday came just four days after he made his debut for the country when he came off the bench as a second-half substitute in their 1-1 draw against Argentina. Not bad considering the Argentinians featured Lionel Messi and had Sergio Aguero and Angel Di Maria as substitutes.

But Brereton really announced himself to his new fanbase with the only goal of the game against Bolivia to take Chile to the top of their group in Brazil.

He struck after ten minutes - Eduardo Vargas playing the ball into his path and Brereton doing the rest as he buried the ball into the bottom corner from 15 yards.

Brereton was born and brought up in Stoke-on-Trent but his mum Andrea was born in Chile and moved to England as a girl.

The striker came through Stoke City's youth academy but was snapped up by Nottingham Forest as a 16-year-old

He represented England at youth level during his time at the City Ground, but was on Chile’s radar for some time.

Brereton would make 57 first-team appearances for the club before he was bought by Championship rivals Blackburn Rovers in 2019 for a deal believed to be worth around £7m.

He's netted seven goals for Blackburn this season - and can now add an international goal to his CV.

He has previously said: "I’m half Chilean. My mum is from Chile and my dad is from England, so I am half Chilean.

“The lads didn’t believe me, but my mum came over to England when she was young and ended up with my dad.

"I’ve been when I was younger but I can’t really remember it. I have family over there so it would be good to see the place. My grandparents are over here now, but I have other family members over there."

Chile are next in action on Monday when they face Uruguay.
