Former Newcastle United star linked with surprise transfer amid Premier League interest

Newcastle United flop Florian Thauvin is 'incredibly close' to agreeing a shock switch to Mexican outfit Tigres, according to reports.

The French World Cup winner looks set to depart Marseille this summer upon the expiration of his deal, and is 'on the verge' of accepting an offer with the Liga MX side according to Get Football News France via La Provence, although Crystal Palace are also reportedly interested.

Thauvin made just three starts under former manager Steve McClaren following his arrival in the summer of 2015, before agreeing a swift temporary return to the Stade Velodrome.

Following two loan spells back in France, United agreed to a permanent exit for a loss on their investment in the region of £12m.

Thauvin quickly bounced back from his disappointing stint in black-and-white and showcased a fine run of form which earned his place in Didier Deschamps' World Cup squad in the summer of 2018.

Injury and the suspension of football in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted this momentum in the 2019-20 campaign, and it looks like Thauvin is set to snub Marseille's offer to renew his deal in favour of linking up with André-Pierre Gignac at Tigres.

A report from Mexican outlet TeleDiario suggests a deal has been "90% agreed" between the club and the 28-year-old, with a five-year deal said to be on the table.
