Former Newcastle Knight Jarrod Mullen charged twice with driving offences

SIX years after he was convicted of supplying cocaine as part of a Lake Macquarie drug syndicate, former Newcastle Knights captain Jarrod Mullen was allegedly caught driving while suspended twice last month.

Mullen, now 39, who has admitted his life spiralled out of control and he fell into drug addiction after he was banned for steroids in 2017, was charged with driving while suspended in the Wollongong area in early June.

He did not appear in Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday and did not enter a plea.

The matter was adjourned to July 21.

But court records show Mullen was allegedly pulled over and charged with driving while suspended in the Port Macquarie area in late June.

That matter is first listed in Port Macquarie Local Court on July 22.

Banned from the NRL for four years and in the grips of a drug addiction that almost cost him his life, the former Knights' star and one-time NSW Origin representative was in 2018 caught in the net of a large-scale drug syndicate operating between Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Sydney.

Mullen was initially accused of supplying cocaine on four occasions at Cameron Park during November 2018.

But he ultimately pleaded guilty to one count of supplying a prohibited drug, relating to 39 grams of cocaine he bought from a dealer to fund his own habit.

He mostly sold to his friends, used encoded messenger apps like WhatsApp to avoid detection and employed code phrases such as "a couple of beers" to refer to the drugs.

Mullen ultimately avoided a jail term, but was convicted and sentenced to a three-year community corrections order with 300 hours of community service.
