Former Manchester United striker and Busby Babe Alex Dawson dies aged 80

Former Manchester United striker and member of the famous Busby Babes Alex Dawson has passed away aged 80.

The club confirmed on Friday that the striker, who played at Old Trafford for four seasons, has died.

In a tweet, Manchester United said: "Our deepest sympathies are with the loved ones of former United forward and Busby Babe, Alex Dawson, who has sadly passed away at the age of 80.

"He will be fondly remembered by all of us at the club.

"May he rest in peace."

Dawson scored 45 goals in 80 league games for the Red Devils after being signed by Matt Busby as a youngster.

The Aberdeen-born striker was not selected by Sir Matt Busby for their fateful trip to Belgrade in 1958, which saw several team-mates lose their live in the Munich Air Disaster.

Geoff Bent, Roger Byrne, Eddie Colman, Mark Jones, David Pegg, Tommy Taylor, Liam Whelan and Duncan Edwards lost their lives in the crash which decimated the team and left Dawson amongst those aiming to rebuild the club.

Dawson went on to join Preston North End, scoring more than 100 goals for the club - including one in the 3-2 FA Cup final loss to West Ham in 1964.

He had spells at Bury and Brighton before retiring in 1973.

Paying tribute to the former striker, Preston North End said in a tweet: "Everyone at Preston North End is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of legendary forward Alex Dawson at the age of 80.

"Our thoughts are with Alex's loved ones at this sad time, he will be forever in our hearts."
