Former Manchester United player Henrikh Mkhitaryan addresses relationship with Jose Mourinho at Roma

Henrikh Mkhitaryan insists his relationship with Jose Mourinho at Manchester United is irrelevant now they are reunited at Roma.

Mkhitaryan signed a one-year extension with Roma after the club appointed Mourinho as manager, despite their variable period together at United.

Mkhitaryan became Mourinho's second signing in a £26.3million move from Borussia Dortmund in 2016 and played a pivotal role in United's Europa League-winning campaign, scoring in the final against Ajax.

However, Mkhitaryan was sold after 18 months to Arsenal in the swap deal that involved Alexis Sanchez moving in the opposite direction. Mkhitaryan also endured a difficult start to his United career, starting just once in the Premier League in his first three-and-a-half months in England.

“What happened in Manchester stays in Manchester," Mkhitaryan told Corriere dello Sport. "We spoke as mature people, we both want to go the same way, we both want to win something for Roma. The only thing that matters is this year.

"He is the same person, but with more desire to win than then (at United). A coach like him never gives up, he always wants to win.

"This characteristic is innate, it cannot be acquired over time. Mourinho is special for this reason."
